Why is cortisone cream bad for you?

I'm currnetly using Elidel to treat my eczema. I was told that cortisone creams and such are bad for you. I read that it can cause some terrible side effects, but what are they?





I was just wondering since I have been using this type of cream for a long time now (I've been using Elecon since I was about 5 years old, then switched to Triamcinolone Topical Cream for about 3-4 years, then to Protopic for about 2-3 years, and now Elidel for about 2 years). Is it okay if I have been using it on and off?





I was using it about 5 times a week for 3 weeks, then stopped using it for about 1-2 weeks. Do you guys think that is okay?








I have SEVERE eczema, and my terrible allergies don't help (I'm basically alergic to everything). So if some of you could suggest some other treatments, that would be nice too (but please answer my other questions first)

If your doctor is the one who has prescribed it, and they are watching you your are fine. the dosing sounds about right. the reason they say its bad for you is because it is a steroid, and steroids can have all kinds of side effect, but being a topical steroid in the regimen you are using you will be fine. the only thing to be careful of is do not use it on your face, they have found it causes the skin to become really thin and discolored and your doctor has probably told you to avoid putting it there. also follow you regimen, misuse is when problems start, and if you have been using it since you were five, if you were going to get the nasty side effects you would already know. if it works, then stick with it, eczema is hard to treat and alot of the other treatments out there are alot harder on your body than a topical steroid. if or when the topical steroid stops helping (which you have had to change a couple times probably due to ur body starting to build up a resistance) then you and your doctor can discuss other treatment options but for now, stick to your Elidel follow doctors orders, and good luck, keep talking with your doctor, and do research and discuss you feelings and concerns with him/her.Why is cortisone cream bad for you?

The steroid creams over time thin the skin.
Cortisone is a steroid, which is a hormone that affects all sorts of body functions in both good and bad ways. When a person takes steroids orally or by injection, they instantly have very strong effects on all sorts of organs and tissues. When the same steroid is applied to the skin, the effects are nowhere near as strong, but they can cause similar problems if they are use long enough.
